4 tips for dentists to take the fear of the dentist away from a child!

The feeling of fear rises, even before the children come into the dental practice. Their heart rate goes up and tears well up. It’s not uncommon for children, or even adults, to be afraid of the dentist. But where does this fear come from? It has to start somewhere. In the Netherlands there are almost one million people who are afraid of the dentist. This often results in postponing their visit and having more dental problems than necessary. What can you do as a dentist to reduce this fear? Hang happy decorations in the waiting room? Some balloons perhaps? What to do to remove the Scary dentist-image? Research shows that fear for the dentist is caused by childhood trauma, in the form of a bad or unpleasant experience. The fear usually starts in young children, because of the bright lights, loud sounds, bad tastes, and a little bit of pain. Enhanced by scary stories from friends or family members, the anxiety only becomes worse. As a dentist, you know that children's primary teeth have more cavities than adult's teeth, because primary teeth are not as strong. Also, many children will visit the dentist at some point after a nasty fall and a broken front tooth. Whatever, the reason, children usually get more dental treatments than adults. Because of this, it is important that children have a positive association with a visit to your dental practice. But how? Wondering how can you ensure this?   When children go to the dentist for the first time, they are not afraid. But parents know that can be scary. And even though children have no idea yet, they can still feel anxiety. So, it is up to parents to give the visit to the dentist an enthusiastic spin. As a dentist, you also have an important role in this, after all, you are going to give the treatment. A positive impression at this point will give you and your young patient a major advantage for later. Parents will appreciate it when the dentist takes the child into account. They will also recommend you as a dentist to friends or family members in the long run. After all, in addition to being a healthcare provider, you are also an entrepreneur. Below you will find 4 tips that will help you to reduce children’s fear of the dentist: 1.    Allow kids to come with their parents for their appointments. Give them something to do, like letting them “help” you with the treatment, so you can prevent fear of the dentist. Of course, this isn’t only up to you. But you can stimulate and inform parents about the advantage. So, parents will bring their children along when they go for their own treatment, even if children feel some fear. This is your chance as a dentist to give the child a positive vibe. As a dental practice you can indicate that there is a possibility that children can come along and attend the treatment in the treatment room and help as a dentist. Let them help you with the treatment and give children a little bit of responsibility. Small things like putting the dental chair their parent is sitting in up and down and taking a look at Daddy's mouth. Children will love this, and you will contribute to a positive effect of visiting a dentist, the anxiety will decrease or disappear altogether. At the end of the appointment, you could give the children a certificate with 'Successful in Dentistry' and let them keep the face mask as a souvenir. Possibly supplemented with a small (sugar free) candy? You just made their day! 2.    Reduce fear by starting early to prepare for the dentist visit! A positive approach is an important thing for kids. By introducing them to the dentist at an early age, a child will definitely benefit from this later on. Advise parents to start preparing one or two weeks before the visit, this can be done by reading booklets about the dentist or talking about it at home. There are several booklets for sale in which children can get information about what it is like to visit the dentist and reduce anxiety. Try to choose a book title with a positive twist, there are many booklets for sale with 'Afraid of the dentist' or 'The dentist is a monster'! Try to recommend the booklets that add a cheerful note, for example: 'The happy Dental Salon! 3.    Play acting as a Dentist at home A role-playing game might be a little uncomfortable for parents at first, but it often works very well for children. By recommending parents to do a role play at home, you will notice that children with a more secure feeling will enter the treatment room and fear of the dentist will disappear. Parents do have face masks at home nowadays, the most recognizable item of a dentist. This way, you can advise parents to create a recognizable setting for the children. So that everything at the dental practice isn’t new and scary. Children will enjoy going to the dentist despite the fact that they have to get a treatment. 4.    Playing in the dental practice distracts children and prevents fear of the dentist In addition to the tips above, playing before their appointment also provides a positive distraction. Children can redirect their anxious thoughts for a while and focus on the games that you offer in your waiting room. One of the reasons that many dentists decide against toys in the waiting room, is that somebody always has to clean up all the games, books, and puzzle pieces a few times a day. But there are play concepts that are easy to clean and don’t contain any loose parts. So, you can keep your waiting room interior tidy and clean. A kids’ corner doesn't have to be big. You won’t have that many kids in your waiting room at the same time. An interactive screen, where children can choose between different dental-themed games already offers enough solution. With an interactive game, children can get familiar with the work you do as a dentist. For children, it has a calming effect when they see recognizable elements from the game come back during the treatment. IKC makes software with games that fit your wishes and corporate identity. Conclusion: Two to three times a year a visit to the dentist is necessary and as a dentist you have an important role to play in relaxing children and making sure they have a positive experience, to prevent fear for the dentist. Parents also have an influence on this, but you will have to educate them about the importance of preparation. This starts at an early age. A little bit of nervousness in children is healthy when, but it is important that the nervousness Once bitten, twice shy! Therefore, the best solution is prevention: create the most positive atmosphere possible for your youngest patients.does not turn into fear or anxiety. 5 locations with a family-oriented store design

Now that the summer holiday is here, it’s the perfect time to relax and pick up some annual chores. Your customers know their way to your store to get the necessary supplies for their own interior design or to do a quick errand. But what to do with their kids? Will your customers bring them along or leave them at home? Are they going to behave themselves so your customers can take their time to make the right purchase choices? For many parents, these are everyday questions. How great would it be, if they never have to worry about this when they visit your store? ‘How child-friendly is your interior store design?’ Store owners sometimes fail to realise that a child-friendly shop fitting can help increase turnover and efficiency. A child-friendly approach does not have to be difficult. Small details can make a big difference; a restroom with a changing table, a kids’ only event or a play corner where children can have fun while their parents browse the store. Many retailers are looking for ways to entertain children in their store and that’s where IKC comes in. IKC has been developing family-oriented store designs for shops, showrooms, and other retail businesses for many years. Worldwide, children from many different cultures play in our kids’ corners. Something IKC is very proud of!  While going shopping, parents make a conscious choice for a store where they can bring their children with them rather than leave them at home or finding a babysitter for an hour. When parents feel that their children are welcome in your store, they will sooner choose your store and they will comfortable enough to stay longer, this automatically ensures a higher turnover. Below we show you 5 different retailers that already experience the advantages of a child-friendly shop fitting. An asset for you as a store owner! 1.    A child-friendly shop interior for your supermarket. A quick trip to the supermarket for the weekly groceries. This means your customers will be in your store for a while. Unless, the children get bored and want to go home. No worries. When your supermarket is kids proof, the whole family will have positive experience! Parents can do their groceries while children find their way to the play corner to enjoy themselves while they wait. Many supermarkets have already set up a kids’ corner, in order to relieve customers of their worries while shopping. Children can have a carefree time and play in a safe and educational environment. ‘Mothers prefer to come to us for grocery shopping, because they can take their children with them (Owner - Albert Heijn supermarket, Bavel).’ 2.    Longer in store time for your clothing store due to a kids’ corner Children playing and laughing. Happy faces. There is nothing better for parents than to know that their children are having fun. While mothers and fathers browse through the latest collection, children can play in the kids’ corner. On wall games and interactive screens, children can have fun with educational games without your store loosing too much retail space. But is this really a good investment? Research shows that a family-oriented store design results in longer 'in store time' and higher retention. That's where the profit lies for you! More and more clothing stores see the benefits of play corners, both for their own business results and for relieving their customers while shopping. That's why they are increasingly responding to customer demand. With a bespoke kids’ corner they strive to apply child-friendliness and thus create a total experience for the whole family. The kids’ corner is a great solution for allowing parents more time to browse and shop at their leisure (Interior Manager - H&M Netherlands) 3.    Child-friendliness increases turnover in your furniture store DING DONG! "Jasper would like to be picked up from the Play Village! This broadcast sounds familiar to many parents. Often, these parents are customers who have been shopping for a couple of hours. While they were browsing the furniture collection, their children were immersed in a children’s world where they can be themselves and play safely. Partly because of the interactive elements, children can entertain themselves for hours.  Often, customers will view a visit to a large furniture showroom as a day out with the family. Even though, choosing new furniture is not a favourite pastime for children, they often have to come along with their parents. By setting up a play area, you increase the chances of families choosing your home store because the children feel just as welcome as their parents. IKC has helped Home centre Wolvega through the whole process. Safety, hygiene, great communication and a beautiful design were central to the collaboration. (Home Centre, Wolvega) 4.    Spending an afternoon with the family in your garden centre Just like a visit to a Furniture store, shopping at a garden centre can feel like a fun afternoon out for the whole family. Many garden centres nowadays choose to add extra experience for children, in order to give parents, the time and space to shop at their leisure. With a bespoke play corner, treasure hunts and sometimes a whole entertainment program, garden centres offer a total experience for the whole family.  In several garden centres this now includes a coffee corner or lunchroom where customers can take a short break from shopping to enjoy a delicious lunch or a cup of coffee before continuing. During this break, children can enjoy themselves in the kids’ corner.  Families are more likely to come to our garden centre because the children can have fun while their parents are shopping for plants and garden accessories.  - (Manager Groenrijk Nunspeet) 5.    Fun for kids helps improve your sales conversations in your car showroom You probably recognize that TV commercial where the tanned car salesman welcomes a family into his showroom. With a big smile, he approaches the children 'What a beautiful family, another cup of coffee? No matter how crazy this sounds, this car salesman gets it. Buying a car is a big deal, it’s not a quick decision to make. Therefore, it will take a while and parents can’t leave the children at home. But children don’t care about the rims or leather seats. So, once they’re done testing the back seat, they can get bored. A play corner will keep them busy while you can do your sales pitch. Have you taken this into account in your showroom interior? While the children play, your customers have more attention for your advice. Because of the kids’ corner I can speak with customers and give thoughtful advice without getting interrupted.   (Car dealer - Jaap de Vries). A family-oriented store design has advantages for the whole family. Parents can have a more relaxed shopping experience, when your establishments offers an experience for the whole family. A place where children can enjoy themselves makes them feel welcome, which in turn feels good for their parents and it results in a higher turnover for you.  This way, you can actually get children to love your store so much, that they drag their parents back every time?   Download our Retail brochure fore more inspiration

Daycare centre 't Parelbosch has undergone a metamorphosis!

Our account manager Niels Jellema proudly tells about his project at daycare 't Parelbosch in Eindhoven. Thanks to the good teamwork between 't Parelbosch and Niels, IKC has managed to transform a number of spaces at the daycare centre into a true children's paradise. Fitting play value for different age groups Daycare centre 't Parelbosch provides care for children up to 4 years old. Within the daycare, there are various spaces that are each tailored to the age groups that are being looked after there, so each space has a different theme with appropriate activities. It was time to renovate the daycare centre and the new interior had to offer more experience for the children, with beautiful designs and a lot of play value. "Thanks to the clear explanation and good input from Roel and Bas van de Waal, the owners of 't Parelbosch, together with the IKC design team I was able to come to an appropriate advice. After this, we started redesigning the first room of the daycare centre: Droomland".  Play concepts for children between 3 and 4 years old Droomland (Dreamland) is the largest room at the daycare centre, here children from 36 to 48 months are cared for. "We have translated the Droomland theme into cosy playhouses, cool floor and wall decorations, tailor-made wall games and an awesome car track." All parts of the play area match the themes nature and fantasy. In addition, there are small graphic surprises hidden in various places in the wall decoration. For example, animals hidden in trees and a ladybug, the logo of the daycare centre, in the air. As a result, the children will be continuously amazed and will be stimulated to explore the room.  A play area for toddlers The next room is the Zwanennest (Swan’s nest): the room for toddlers from 18 to 27 months. Children of this age experience many stimuli because they have outgrown the baby phase and are constantly learning. To create balance for this age group, the owners stressed the importance that this space should convey a feeling of warmth and security. This leads to calmer children, giving the staff more time and attention to each individual child. "Through soft materials and light colours, we have shaped this space with many visually recognizable aspects such as swans, a pond, a play farm and bead table." The beads table is a very suitable play system for this age group, the children are stimulated to play with the colourful beads, which is good for the development of their fine motor skills. Even the youngest children get their own place The third room we tackled, was the Hertenweide (Deer Meadow). This space is meant for the youngest ones: children from 0 to 18 months. To introduce the children to nature and different materials in a playful manner, we gave this space a natural theme and placed a special feel-house. This house has several different materials and surfaces that the children's sensitive fingers can explore. For example, artificial grass, cork, a mirror, and PU leather. Indoor play area the Kermistuin  Finally, and to top it all off, we transformed the Kermistuin (Funfair garden) into a true indoor children's play paradise. We had to consider the layout of this area carefully. Here it was decided to separate the practical part of this space, the care area, from the playing area. This way, children can be cared for quietly on one side of the room, while on the other side the children can play freely. The indoor Kermistuin is full of fantastic play concepts. For example, there are playhouses on an artificial grass floor, a “haunted” attic, and a custom carousel. Which child doesn't want that? Important moments of the day are incorporated in the design For each age group, a collective circle moment takes place every day. This moment is used by the caregivers to explain to the children what the day will look like. From a pedagogical perspective, these moments are most effective when children experience it as a group moment, where the caregivers are part of the group. We considered the best visual way to reinforce this feeling and ended up adding a suitable, recognisable location for the circle moment to each room. For example, the Zwanennest has a round pond and the Kermistuin has a big, round swirl. All areas have play modules that focus on the age of the children in that room. Very cool and completely custom made. "The first response I got from the owners was that they are more than satisfied with the metamorphoses that has taken place! This is of course very nice to hear. It was a great collaboration with an even better outcome". We look forward to working together again in the future!

The new generation wants to dine in family friendly restaurants

Now that new generations are becoming parents, hospitality establishments are regularly having to reconsider their menu, restaurant layout and interior design. The new generations are in fact looking for healthier eating establishments where their children have the space to play freely, while the adults can eat and drink at their leisure.    Unhygienic ball pits and dangerous climbing structures are a thing of the past. Nowadays, visitors expect the play area to be as safe and clean as the rest of the restaurant. The new child-friendly restaurants are therefore increasingly focusing on discerning parents with higher expectations of their dining experience, both for themselves and their children. It used to be a challenge to find a family-friendly restaurant with a healthy menu. Back then, it was mainly the fast food restaurants that focused on children. Nowadays an increasing number of different hospitality establishments see the importance and advantages of satisfied families. Therefore, the number of family friendly restaurants is increasing. Making it easier for parents to choose a healthy, yet family-friendly option."Our kids’ corner gives us an advantage over our competitors, they don't have a play area. And as a result, families come to us more often." According to Irene Maris of Beachclub Kaaphoorn. "In addition, the kids’ corner also ensures that guests stay longer and order more."    Today's children are the next generation of guests, so it's simply smart marketing to make the children feel welcome in your restaurant from an early age.Is your restaurant family friendly? 5 x waiting room toys for your healthcare facility

You probably recognize this scenario: your waiting room is full of patients who are immersed in one of the many magazines you offer on the reading table. In the corner of the waiting room there are some toys that a few children are playing with. For example, a table with Legos. You already know that more Lego will end up on the floor than will stay on the table. In addition, it is always a major job to make sure that the kids’ corner is clean and tidy again for the next day. Perhaps these reasons have often caused you to doubt your play solution. Or maybe the solution you have is not strong or interesting enough for busy children who are already a bit stressed for their consultation. These are issues that almost every healthcare facility with a waiting room must deal with, from dentists to hospitals. So, the big question is: Which waiting room toys are most suitable for my healthcare facility? The answer to this question is unique for each healthcare facility and varies depending on the available space and the number of children that are usually present in the waiting room. The play solution can be adjusted to the space, the number of children and the average age of the children. In this article we will give you five case examples of successful waiting room toy solutions. Perhaps you are now wondering what we define as "successful solutions". That is why we will first briefly summarise the benefits that our customers regularly communicate back to us. One of the most common advantages is that children who can play, are less tense going into their consultation. This will make their appointments go smoother. These, more efficient consultations, lead to financial benefits and a higher level of patient satisfaction through a positive and hospitable atmosphere in your hospital, practice or institution. Idi de Boer is Manager Care for the Emergency Room of the Martini Hospital in Groningen and she indicates: <Toys in the waiting room> help to ensure that the visit of our youngest patients to the emergency room goes as pleasantly as possible. Be inspired and informed by the examples below and discover how you can entertain children in your waiting room by placing the right play concepts. A practical toy solution in the waiting room of eye clinic Drechtstede Eye clinic Drechtstede has made a practical consideration regarding their waiting room toys. Hygiene and safety were the focus. In their waiting room they placed two play concepts where multiple children can play at the same time, namely a bead table and a touchtable.  An important advantage of a touchtable is that the touch screen can be easily cleaned by regularly wiping it with a screen cloth. Also, with this solution there are no loose toys lying around in the waiting room. This is safe, hygienic and easy for the staff. Recognisable play corners in the waiting rooms of Maasstad Hospital Maasstad Hospital in Rotterdam had a different approach to their waiting room toys. They emphasized the recognisability of the play corners throughout the entire hospital. Many of the wards have a kids’ corner with the same jungle theme, kids’ furniture and wall games.  Maasstad Hospital also chose to show the paediatric ward mascot in each play corner. This makes children feel welcome and happy throughout the hospital. Maasstad Hospital's facilities manager confirms that this can be noticed during appointments: Every day, our doctors notice that children are more relaxed when they enter the treatment room, which makes it easier to get through the appointments. A smart placement of the kids’ corner in Floriande's waiting room The amount of space in the waiting room that can be occupied by a play solution often depends on the type of healthcare facility. For example, a waiting room in a hospital often has more space available than the waiting room of a local dentist or doctor's office.  At Health Centre Floriande they have opted for a smart placement of the kids’ corner. They used, a lost corner of the waiting room, under the stairs. In order to give the corner an extra element of fun, this space has been turned into the kids’ very own waiting area. The wall is clad in a cheerful design and children can wait and play at their own kids’ table with kids’ chairs. Waiting room toy with a Healthcare-theme at the Erasmus hospital The Erasmus hospital sticks to a healthcare theme with their waiting room play solution. In the waiting room, children can get behind the wheel of an ambulance or play with one of the attached game modules or the interactive touch screen. By placing this play concept, the Erasmus hospital creates a pleasant atmosphere in their waiting room, which makes the waiting period more pleasant for all patients. An additional advantage, the staff also benefit from a quiet waiting room, where they do not have to spend a lot of time cleaning up toys. Waiting room toys for children of all ages at doctor’s office Kemps Doctor’s office Kemps has filled an empty wall in the waiting room with a combination of interactive play systems, a wall game and soft play elements that children can sit on or play with. Due to the well-considered choice in types of toys for the waiting room, children of all ages can enjoy themselves. This creates a pleasant ambiance for waiting, which leads to less stress during the doctor's appointment. The manager of the Kemps GP office indicates: The kids’ corner creates a quiet and pleasant atmosphere in the waiting room. In short, to create the perfect kids’ corner for your waiting room, consider the following aspects: easy to clean safety no loose parts low maintenance strategic placement theme of the kids’ corner play value for all ages entertainment for multiple children at the same time More inspiration about waiting room toys can be found in our portfolio. On our site you can also find more information about the advantages of the correct use of waiting room toys for your healthcare facility.
